As the temperatures warm up during the summer months, there are certain maintenance steps, including preventative insecticide treatments that will keep a lawn at its healthiest. Modern Turf Landscaping Company of Rembert, S.C., provides preventative insecticide treatment advice and services to decrease and eliminate insect problems that can leave lawns, golf courses and sports fields with damaged grass.

Grubs, armyworm and webworm problems can wreak havoc on a lawn if left untreated. By taking the proper steps to apply preventative insecticide treatment during late summer, homeowners are less likely to be faced with an insect problem throughout the year.

According to Modern Turf Founder Hank Kerfoot, even healthy turf can experience a significant insect population with no obvious turf damage, especially if rain fall is high during the spring and fall months. However, if the signs of insect infestation are obvious and the grass appearance is suffering it is time to treat the area with insect-control chemicals.

Modern Turf’s landscaping professionals offer advice to keep grass-damaging insects at bay and recommend preventative insecticide treatment as a proactive approach to avoiding insect problems before they begin. The company also specializes in growing and installing a complete variety of high quality turfgrass requiring less water, fertilizer and pesticides, taking a holistic approach to reducing and eliminating insect problems.

“Preventative insecticide treatments help to ensure your lawn isn’t damaged by insects and is especially important for newly installed turfgrass that can be vulnerable to insect damage,” said Kerfoot. “Modern Turf is available to provide consultations for insecticide treatments as well as services to provide on-site analysis and expert treatment applications.”

If interested in receiving preventative insecticide advice or for a free consultation from Modern Turf’s landscaping professionals, contact Kerfoot at 803-713-8873.

Kerfoot

It is a common idea that summer fertilization can damage or burn plants, but realistically the right summer fertilization program can keep plants and lawns healthy if properly applied. The key is to apply the correct amount of fertilizer and follow the application with watering to dissolve the product and quickly deliver it to the roots to promote healthy plant growth.

Choosing time-released summer fertilizers is another way to avoid burning plants. Time-released products are user-friendly and work especially well when there is regular rainfall or a consistent watering. A lighter application of fertilizer is best during the warm summer months.

Summer Fertilization to Meet Specific Grass, Turf Needs

A common turfgrass, Bermuda tends to require more nutrients as the temperatures rise. Most Bermuda grasses especially benefit from the addition of phosphorus, a nutrient that is often overlooked but plays a vital role in the health and growth of the grass. Phosphorous is identified on a fertilizer product packaging as the middle number in the list of numbers.

Your grass may need more phosphorus as part of the summer fertilization program or it could need nitrogen and/or potassium. In order to know exactly what your turf or lawn needs, conduct a soil test to get an accurate picture of what your grass requires to flourish.

Other types of grasses, such as St. Augustine, tend to benefit from nitrogen application during the summer months, which will enhance color and create a beautiful lawn or turf. An important tip is to choose slow-release or organic nitrogen sources to keep the grass as healthy as possible.

You may be able to detect nutrient deficiencies by analyzing the grass. For example yellowing, drooping or stunted growth are all signs of a deficiency in nitrogen. However, for the most accurate analysis, it is best to send samples to you local agricultural extension office or obtain assistance from a landscape professional.

When it comes to fertilizing turfgrass areas, fertilizing prior to heavy rain or heavy watering can wash away the fertilizer product, wasting the product and resulting in downward leaching, potentially polluting nitrate into nearby rivers and streams.

If there is significant shade over the grass or turf, take this into considering when determining the right summer fertilization program. For some types of grasses in shade, fertilization should be avoided to prevent disease.

There is no need to avoid any and all summer fertilization. While an inexperienced landscaper can over-apply and risk burning the plants, a light application of the right products can provide the nutrition support necessary to maintain a beautiful and healthy lawn or turf year-round. Often, homeowners and golf course superintendents find it helpful to seek professional landscape assistance in order to develop and perform the ideal summer fertilization plan.

Two Myrtle Beach Golf Courses Install New Greens
By
Chris King
on June 30, 2010 10:39 AM

Panther's Run, one of two Myrtle Beach golf courses getting a summer facelift, waters its new greens two months before the course reopens.
Millions of people make a summer pilgrimage to Myrtle Beach, most of them to enjoy sun, sand and a taste of life on the coast. While area beaches are teeming with people, Myrtle Beach golf courses often use the “down time” for improvement projects, and this summer is no different.

A pair of North Strand Courses – Panther’s Run at Ocean Ridge Plantation and the Bay Course at Sandpiper Bay Golf & Country Club, home of three nine hole layouts – are closed for the installation of new MiniVerde ultradwarf Bermuda greens and general course refurbishments.
That both courses are installing MiniVerde greens is no surprise. MiniVerde has emerged as the green of choice for many courses throughout the South with a putting surface that is nearly the equal of bentgrass and it’s very heat tolerant.

The installation of the MiniVerde on the Bay Course will complete a three-year overhaul of the Sandpiper’s greens. In 2008 the Sand Course had MiniVerde installed and in 2009, the Piper Course followed suit. The Bay Course, which was sprigged on June 8, is scheduled to reopen on August 23.

The greens on the Bay nine are approximately a week ahead of schedule, but the course’s reopening won’t be moved, according to Sandpiper’s head pro and assistant general manager Richard Kascsak.

Sandpiper knew it had made the right call in installing MiniVerde greens immediately after the Sand Course reopened to the public in 2008.

“The general public loves the greens,” Kascsak said of the reception to the MiniVerde. “They are in fabulous condition and our superintendent has done a superior job on the grow-in. We have had nothing but positive remarks.”

Sandpiper is also using the time to repair the drainage on all of the Bay’s bunkers, in addition to removing trees and enhancing the fairways. When the Bay Course reopens, the Piper Course will close for 10 days to take down trees and repair the cart paths, ensuring the course will be in prime shape for the fall golf season.

In addition to the installation of new grass at Panther’s Run, the greens are being restored to their original size, trees and some railroad ties around tee boxes are being removed, and the cart paths are being repaired.

Panther’s Run will reopen on September 1.

Both of these renovations were made by Modern Turf. For great greens or great grass at your home, Modern Turf is a great place to start.

When seeking a durable yet beautiful grass for sports turf and lawns, few grasses compare to Tifway 419 Bermuda Grass. It is known as one of the most popular grasses for sports fields for more than 40 years, and is also a preferred choice for homeowners and business owners who want an attractive grass presentation for their lawns.

Tifway 419 features a dense canopy that spreads rapidly and recovers quickly from injury. Experts call it one of the most durable hybrids in the Bermuda grass family. Its tolerance of short mowing and resistance to disease make it a versatile grass that is also excellent for roughs and fairways. Landscape professionals prefer the grass because it performs well in a variety of climates and soil environments.

A cross between Cynodon dactylon and C. transvaalensis germplasma, Tifway 419 has a deep green hue and leaves with a medium-fine texture. It also possesses growth habit that is medium to low and grows rapidly, which means it quickly establishes roots after planting.

Tifway 419 performs ideally in warmer climates and will likely become dormant following multiple winter frosts, however, it bounces back to life as the temperatures increase. This durable grass has the ability to survive drought seasons and times of low water availability, making it ideal for locations with limited access to water.

High traffic is no problem for Tifway, because it recovers well and maintains a healthy appearance thanks to quickly regenerating stolons and rhizomes. While weeds may grow in the midst of Tifway grass, proper maintenance will allow it to withstand use of herbicides and even treatments for pest control when necessary.

The soft, lush grass of Tifway 419 makes it a perfect carpet for children at play and a variety of sports and games. With the right kind of maintenance and care, Tifway can outperform the highest quality turfgrass, making it ideal for golf courses and parks requiring a beautiful appearance and high functionality.

A NTEP trial conducted in 2001 revealed that Tifway 419 Bermuda Grass outperformed the popular Tifsport grass. More and more landscaping professionals are identifying Tifway 419 as the go-to grass for sports fields as well as residential and commercial lawns.

While all hybrid Bermuda grasses develop thatch as time passes, Tifway 419 builds thatch faster than some other grasses. However, with careful maintenance including a consistent mowing schedule in the season of high growth, an appropriate fertilization routine, core aeration and verti-cutting, the thatch overgrowth can be kept to a minimum.

Whether you are a golf course superintendent, homeowner or business owner or a landscape professional, Tifway 419 Bermuda Grass has proven to be a good choice for a variety of sports fields and locations.

Once the ground has been prepared and sod has been laid, it is time to focus on proper sod maintenance to ensure a lawn flourishes during the weeks and months to come. Rembert, S.C.’s Modern Turf Turfgrass Production Company provides free advice to help home owners and business owners perfect their sod maintenance routines and achieve an ideal lawn health and appearance.

Without proper maintenance, even the healthiest sod can fail to root. The first four to six weeks after sod installation are crucial to the survival and condition of the sod. Modern Turf identifies specific steps necessary for developing sod that roots and actively grows.

Hank Kerfoot, founder of Modern Turf, says sod maintenance should change with the seasons, making it important to work with professionals who understand the unique needs of each season and can create a customized sod maintenance plan that is right for each individual lawn and local climate.

Installing an irrigation system, such as an automated sprinkler system or a root soaking system will ensure the sod receives the moisture necessary for proper rooting and growth. According to Kerfoot, the sod should receive water several times each day for approximately two to four weeks, or until it has thoroughly rooted into the underlying soil. After this initial frequent watering period, once a day and then a couple times a week is typically sufficient irrigation unless there is a time of severe heat or drought.

Kerfoot suggests that people should prevent walking on the new sod while it is rooting in order to avoid forming air pockets that can prevent proper root growth. Rolling the sod is another way to pack down the sod and promote root attachment. Additionally, fertilizing about six weeks following installation is an important step to sod maintenance.

“When conducting sod maintenance, it is important to pay attention to the details, such as watering immediately after applying fertilizer, which if neglected can burn the grass,” explained Kerfoot. “Modern Turf’s landscaping professionals understand the ins and outs of sod maintenance and are here to offer advice and provide an array of expert services to keep your home or business lawn looking healthy and beautiful.”

Are you tired of weak or shaded 419? Modern Turf is the proud new owner of a no-till sprig planter that has the ability to plant Celebration bermudagrass into stands of worn-out or shaded areas of existing turf. This planter is tough and aggressive – just like Celebration! We can plant 5 to 15 acres a day with minimal disruption of play. All you have to do is aerify and irrigate prior to our arrival and we can do the rest.

Keep in mind that, despite recent claims by a new variety of shade tolerant bermudagrass, Celebration has been on the market for 10 years and has a proven track record in the shade and in full sun. Celebration is tougher and far more aggressive than the new variety. The new variety suggests planting by sod only and claims the grass is “not overly aggressive and will tend to stay where planted and not encroach into nearby areas”. This would likely indicate how it will perform in wear environments like say - anywhere on a golf course. That should tell you something about the true character of this new grass. Now we would be happy to sell you “sod only” and not sprigs but Celebration covers ground like no other. Think of Celebration as a turf warrior fighting for you every day covering divots and marching into the shade!

Compared to Tifway 419 Celebration is more aggressive, uses less fertilizer, requires less water and is harder to wear out. It is also more shade tolerant than any other bermudagrass on the market. Celebration can be cut at .325 with a reel mower and produce an exquisite fine bladed low cut turf making it ideal for fairways and tees as well. Celebration also comes with references of golf course superintendents who have successfully grown it for years.

So lets get started improving your turf today. Shady or sunny, low cut or rough cut, it’s time to start phasing out the old and replace it with the best. At Modern Turf we have state-of-the-art grasses and state-of-the-art equipment to plant it. We can also use the no-till sprig planter to introduce Zorro Zoysia, SeaDwarf seashore paspalum or replant winter kill areas of Tifway 419. Give us a call, set up a site visit and let us help you improve the turf quality at your facility.

Modern Turf Landscaping Company Advises Landscaping with Sod

H.
University studies have backed up claims that Celebration Bermudagrass is among the most tolerant grasses available. It was even rated at the top of the list for wear and overall quality of turf. The Celebration Bermudagrass engineers in Austrailia created the grass to be a high performer in rugged conditions. Even if the grass in damaged, it bounces back to a healthy form quickly.

A hybrid cultivar of Bermuda grass, Celebration Bermudagrass first came onto the scene in the U.S. in 2002 and has been a favorite for landscaping professionals ever since due to the grasses’ durability, low maintenance requirements and attractiveness. This grass can be grown in numerous soils, from clay soils to sandy loam, and even has a high frost tolerance.

Celebration Bermudagrass Appearance

While it may be one of the sturdiest grasses available, Celebration Bermudagrass is also well known for its beautiful appearance. It has a dark bluish green hue and boasts a rapid growth of thick, tightly growing grass featuring a fine leaf blade perfect for sports turf that requires grass with an attractive, uniform look and soft feel. The grass holds color well in the fall and turns green right away in the early spring months.

Even some home lawns can seem more like sports turf with all of the running and playing, especially if the home belongs to families with children. That’s why Celebration Bermudagrass is also known as a great product for residential yards. Homeowners do not always have time available to baby the yard, and this type of Bermudagrass provides a great way for even busy homeowners to enjoy a beautiful yard of which they can be proud.

Even better for busy homeowners, business owners or sports turf maintenance professionals is that Celebration Bermudagrass will reportedly reduce mowing by half in comparison to other Bermuda grass varieties. The efficient root system present in Celebration also means there is less need for watering and weeding. These features save time and money, while still providing for a perfect lawn.

Celebration Bermudagrass is a Friend of the Environment

For people concerned about making the best choices for the environment, Celebration Bermudagrass is a good option as it has a growth habit that acts as a barrier to weeds, which reduces the need for herbicide. Additionally, the reduced need for mowing means a decreased carbon footprint and fewer emissions from equipment.

Whether your primary goal is a beautiful yard, less maintenance or being environmentally friendly, Celebration Bermudagrass has proven to be a top choice for commercial and residential lawn as well as sports fields.

Kerfoot

When you are ready to begin the process of buying sod for your lawn, it helps to understand what sod is and how you can choose the right kind for your lawn needs. Buying sod for your lawn is a great alternative to seeding, because it provides instant results, creating a beautiful lawn right away. Still, sod requires a certain level of care in order to create a secure root structure that provides long-lasting healthy grass.

Sod is living grass that has been cut and fitted onto pieces of prepared soil ready for placement on a yard. Because sod has already developed roots, it can usually be placed during any time of year, excluding winter when frozen ground poses challenges. Because sod is professionally grown, it is healthy and has strong root development thanks to quality soil, consistent watering and fertilizing. The result is a sod product that creates a dense, lush lawn with no need for seeding.

Where to Turn When Buying Sod

Although sod is available from garden superstores, your chances for receiving the best sod product increases when you go directly to sod production companies and farmers. Choose a company that offers customer service that can provide consultation services, which helps you to choose the ideal sod for your local climate and yard conditions.

Most stores and sod companies offer a wide range of sod products with the top-dollar varieties being sod that requires less care and watering. These more expensive sod products are usually drought, insect and disease resistant, making them worth the investment.

Buying Sod: How to Detect the Best

Knowing what to look for in healthy sod helps you to make the best choice for your lawn. What you are looking for is sod grass that possesses dense foliage with a uniform green hue. Other things to look for in healthy sod are moist soil near the roots and thick roots you can see within the soil. The soil should be less than one inch deep and the roots should be intertwined close together, which shows they will survive the transport well without tearing or breaking down.

Additionally, you will want to verify that the sod product you are purchasing is recently harvested. Check to see whether or not the thatch is visible. A layer of thatch is a warning sign that the sod may have been harvested some time ago and may lead to slower root growth into the soil bed. Ideally, you will want to install sod no more than eight hours following harvest to prevent stress caused by loss of moisture. Stressing the sod can leave it vulnerable to pest issues and grass disease.

Before you begin buying sod, prepare the soil on your property, so that the sod can be laid right away. If your situation prevents immediate sod placement, keep the sod in the shade away from light and heat and take steps to keep the sod product moist to prevent further stress.

Buying sod may be the best investment you could make for your lawn. The results are immediate, so soon after the purchase and placement of the sod you can sit back and enjoy a lush and beautiful lawn.

Plant your sod during the wrong time in the season and extreme temperatures can wreak havoc on your dream lawn. So how can you know when the time is right?

Spring and fall are typically the best times to plant sod. Planting during the beginning of spring or late fall allow the sod to become established before the stress of the extremely hot temperatures present during summertime in most parts of the country. Fall temps are especially conducive to healthy growth and well established sod for your lawn.

What to Do Before Planting the Sod

Once you have determined the best time to plant sod, you will want to make sure you have the right type for your particular soil and the right type to achieve your desired grass outcome. Because soil is literally the foundation for what you hope will become a healthy, vibrant lawn, it is vital to establish the right base of soil prior to planting sod. In other words, the best time to plan sod is in the spring or fall after you’ve identified and prepared the soil.

It is important to determine the composition of your soil. It is likely a combination of two of the following: sand, clay or loam. Ideally, you will send a sample of your soil away for testing or obtain a home test kit to better understand the specific contents of your soil. You are testing the pH balance of the soil. The results will help you to know what amendments you should add in order to best prepare your lawn for sod planting.

Adding amendments such as nitrogen, phosphorus, humus or others help your soil to have the best possible texture and composition to make for close to ideal sod growing circumstances. By giving the best care to your soil, you are setting your sod up for success.

What Does Grading Have to Do with It?

Properly grading your lawn is another important step to take before hammering down the best time to plant sod. There are two grades necessary to run through your lawn before planting. These grades are known as: 1) Rough and 2) Final. You will want to be certain you understand how to do these grades, or you can hire landscape professionals to do the dirty work.

Each state and even many cities and counties have specific guidelines and rules when it comes to planting sod for your lawn, so be sure and check with the building departments in your area before you begin the process.

The right time in the season must be part of the consideration when determining the best time to plant sod, but making sure you have completed other important steps mentioned including identifying, testing, treating, and grading the soil will make all the difference. If achieving a beautiful lawn is your goal, it is wise to follow the right steps to give your lawn the best chance for growth and health.
If you have a lawn maintenance service care for your grass, you may want to review these tips with them to make sure they tend to your investment properly. If you’re taking care of your yard yourself, it’s a good idea to print and post these tips near your mower until you’re completely familiar with them.

When your sod is first installed:
• Water the sod twice a day during the first two weeks. Keep the sod moist – not drenched, not with water puddles.
• Stay off the grass! Any traffic that treads on your sod risks seam separation and root detachment. If you must cross your yard, walk as gently as possible.

When you first mow your sod:
• You can usually mow your sod three weeks after it is installed, or when it grows to a height of about three inches tall – whichever happens first.
• Set your mower height to two and a half inches so you don’t cause distress by cutting the grass too short.
• Never cut the sod if it’s wet. Cutting wet sod puts the yard at risk for developing a matting problem, which leads to an ailing root system.
• Mow once a week as long as the sod is growing. Never cut more than a third of the grass blade’s height during a single mowing.

How to weed and feed:
• After you first mow your sod, feed it with a nitrogen concentrated fertilizer. In subsequent years, use a pre-emergent each spring and fall. This should help keep any weeds from getting out of hand.
• Fertilize every six to eight weeks during the growing season. Be sure to follow all the directions so you don’t use too much nitrogen. A light application of fertilizer is far more beneficial than applying too much. Try using organic fertilizers that are generally lower in nitrogen content.
• Combat crabgrass with a post-emergent herbicide, not with weed and feed. Weed and feed will only make crabgrass grow and spread.

Water smart:
• Water your sod less frequently, but for a longer period of time. This promotes healthy roots that are able to grow deep and keep your grass looking healthy.
• Water in the winter. When your sod is first planted, watering is especially crucial – even in areas that don’t experience a freeze. Once a week if it doesn’t rain is a good rule-of-thumb.
• Water in the morning. Watering early in the day helps you avoid evaporation. It also helps to prohibit the growth of yard fungus, which often happens in yards that are watered in the late afternoon and evening.

By following these tips, you can enjoy easy-to-manage sod grass that’s the envy of your neighborhood. With a little maintenance, your grass can become healthy, hardy, and lush – just the kind of yard you hoped for when you first planted your sod.
Many of these challenges are self-inflicted by homeowners with serious misunderstandings about what is best (and worst) for their grass.

Now that the mowers are safely nestled in their garage cocoons for a few months, it’s time for a little rehab, a little reforming of bad lawn care habits. There’s not a lot you can do when a June drought hits and water restrictions make the front-page of the newspaper. However, by understanding the nature of grass, you can do a lot to avoid making the situation worse.

Drought resistant grass begins at the beginning.
Depending on your region, there are grasses that are likely to do well, and grasses that don’t have a fighting chance of survival. Choose the right kind, and your grass will use water efficiently. Choose the wrong kind, and your grass will slurp up every drop and beg for more. If you are not sure as to the best variety for your particular situation consult a sales professional at www.modernturf.com.

Timing is important, too.
When you water your lawn is at least as important as how often you water it. The advice to water early in the day is not just a practical joke perpetrated by coffee companies hoping to increase sales among sleepy waterers. One reason an early morning drink does wonders for your grass is that there’s generally less wind to interfere with absorption. Also, even in the hottest climates, the early morning hours are the coolest part of the day. This means less of the water you intend for your grass will evaporate before it soaks into the ground.

Watering in the middle of the night is not recommended either, due to the increased risk of promoting diseases. When water sits and doesn’t dry off the surface it creates a breeding ground for many common turf diseases. In an early morning irrigation cycle the surface begins the drying process as the sun comes up and air movement starts to increase.

Frequency is another issue.
A good long soak now and then beats a quick splash on the run every day. The reason is that roots grow deeper when they can linger over a nice long drink of water. Deep roots mean drought resistant grass
Take it easy on the mower.
Like a 10-year old boy with a crew cut, it’s tempting to scalp your yard down to the peach fuzz state, thinking you’ll buy yourself an extra Saturday with no mowing on your to do list. But it doesn’t work that way. Cutting your grass too short is a sure way to end up with shallow roots, too. While setting your mower to leave your lawn a healthy link means you’ll need to mow more often to keep it looking manicured, at least you won’t be mowing dead, brown, scorched grass. Keep in mind that long shoots (leaf blades) = long roots. While in the midst of a drought, resist mowing at all or at least reduce your frequency and raise the height for a healthier and better looking stand of grass.

Bag the bag.
Your lawn will thrive on the nitrogen it can draw from grass clippings. While every lawn needs to be fed, that doesn’t always mean you need to feed it commercial fertilizer. By leaving your mulched clippings on the ground, you can cut your fertilizer use by about a third. Decomposing clippings left by a mulching mower can help save and retain some moisture as well. Use common sense if the lawn is extra long it is not advisable to leave clumps of clippings. You should never fertilize your yard during a drought, anyway. It’ll only stimulate growth that can’t be sustained because of the drought.

Follow these tips for cultivating drought resistant grass, and by the time it’s time for watermelon and lemonade, you’ll be able to enjoy it while sitting on your lovely green lawn. Keep in mind that these are generalizations and can vary due to individual growing conditions, slopes and soil types.
That’s why Modern Turf offers free consultations for local golf course superintendents.

The staff at Modern Turf includes three former golf course superintendents, who understand the challenges of working with MiniVerde and other grasses in such a demanding setting. The quality of the turf impacts the playability of the course, and ultimately its profitability. With the increased popularity of this grass Modern Turf has expanded it’s acreage and now has plenty of sod as well as sprigs. Their staff is able to install both forms of the product.

“We know that the real heroes at any golf operation are the golf course superintendents. Without their expertise, the course would quickly become unplayable. That’s why we offer this free, no-obligation consult to area superintendents. Whether they plant MiniVerde sod or one of the other great grasses we specialize in, we want to make sure all they hear are compliments on the condition of the turf,” said Hank Kerfoot, owner of Modern Turf.

Modern Turf’s MiniVerde sod and sprigs come with a purity certification guarantee and are grown on Methyl bromide fumigated soil. It’s increased success and popularity are directly related to it’s ability to stand up to the wear and tear typical of busy golf courses without overburdening the budget. The nursery specializes in helping residential, sports, and commercial clients choose the turf best suited for their needs.
Golf course owners and superintendents are very specific in their demands for turfgrass products, and MiniVerde seems to be the choice to meet their unique needs the best.

Characterized by a very fine leaf blade and deep green color, this type of grass is also known as MiniVerde Ultradwarf Bermuda and has a lower temperature color retention than other similar varieties. Because it is so versatile, the grass can be closely mowed to heights even lower than 1/8 inch. Golfers appreciate the low height and lack of grain while golf course superintendents say they spend less time baby sitting their greens after planting MiniVerde sod or sprigs.

Golf course owners and course maintenance workers are fans of MiniVerde because it makes their jobs easier. The surface is easily managed in comparison to other ultradwarf grasses due to deep roots and the ability to bounce back from high traffic and cultural practices. Owners also love the fact that it requires less down time which means more tee times!

Primarily a warm season grass grown especially for golf course putting greens, MiniVerde can be planted with a no-till process if the location and site is right. Other qualities that make MiniVerde the top choice of golf course superintendents include:

• Far less grain than other ultradwarf Bermudas.
• Significantly less thatch than others.
• Lower maintenance than other ultradwarf Bermudas.
• Deep roots and plenty of rhizomes.
• Ultra fine leaf blade.
• Deep green hue.
• Velvety look and feel.
• Superior disease resistance.
• Quicker recovery from injury compared to other ultradwarf types.
• Ability to spread quickly during establishment.

Normally planted as sprigs, MiniVerde sod is also available. MiniVerde sod offers a quicker solution to replacing or establishing greens when waiting for sprigs just won’t do. MiniVerde sod is more expensive than sprigs but significantly decreases down time allowing for revenue streams to begin more quickly. Many end users also find MiniVerde sod useful for repairing existing stands of turf that may need to be replaced from time to time.

Keeping putting greens fast, true, attractive and in ideal condition for demanding golfers can take a lot of hard work and money, but using MiniVerde sod and sprigs simplifies the process. You can rest easy when you select MiniVerde, because you know its excellent reputation speaks for itself. With MiniVerde putting greens and the right kind of maintenance, your golf course will keep golfers coming back time and time again.

Who are the pros of golf turf? Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Steve Stricker -when it comes to golf, the pros know what they’re talking about. When it comes to golf turf, you need to talk to the pros as well- and golf course superintendents are pros at managing golf turf. These guys are the ones who know which grasses are the toughest, most durable and most attractive for the perfect golf course.

Golf s course superintendents are the professionals who maintain the course - they fertilize, water, mow and shape the grass to create beautiful greens and fairways that help even the amateurs golf like the pros. Golf superintendents know that the best courses may just use a variety of golf turf in order to create the best surface for each area of the course.

If you’re looking for the perfect grass for the greens, golf course superintendents know that Tifdwarf Bemudagrass has long been considered a favorite. While Tifdwarf has enjoyed enormous popularity, the newest kid on the block, MiniVerde™, has been stealing the show at the NTEP (National Turfgrass Evaluation Program) for the past several years. MiniVerde™ is an ultradwarf Bermudagrass that is hands down the new leader on the putting greens, ranking first in the trials for several years in a row. MiniVerde™ produces high shoot density, with fine leaf blades and short internodes for the perfect putting green.

When you’re talking fairways, Zorro™ Zoysia is still the number one pick at the NTEP trials. For a tough wearing, deep green beautiful grass that adapts to a variety of mowing heights, Zorro™ Zoysia, a super fine-bladed grass, is king of the fairway.

To highlight the roughs, nothing does the job quite like Empire® Zoysia or Celebration™ Bermudagrass. Empire® Zoysia produces a deep green color and a unique texture that helps it stand out from other grasses. Any golf turf is enhanced by the beauty of Empire® Zoysia in the roughs. Celebration™ Bermudagrass is rapidly becoming turf managers first choice in golf course roughs due to its durability, shade tolerance and low water and fertilizer needs.

Tee off with Tifway 419 Bermudagrass and you’ll never be disappointed. Tifway 419 holds the standard for tees, fairways and roughs and many golf course superintendents swear by it! The rapid recovery speed of this fast growing golf turf makes it an excellent choice for the tees, which see plenty of action.

Golf courses are known for their beauty as well as their complexity of play. When you choose the right combinations of golf turf for your course, the beauty is assured, while the play factor is enhanced. To set your course above the rest, you need to choose excellent turfs from a professional sod farm that has a reputation for industry knowledge and product superiority. The financial investment in the turf for your golf course is huge- make sure you get professional, reliable advice from a sod farm that deals specifically with golf turf so your investment is money well spent.

Choosing the right sod type for your home or business can be a challenge when you are unfamiliar with the different varieties of sod available. Chances are, you just want something affordable and low-maintenance that will beautify your landscape. With the right information, you can find the best sod type for your purposes.

Sod comes in many different varieties. In order to ensure your yard is healthy and vibrant, you will first want to determine what type of sod is best for your particular environment. Consider some of these questions about where the sod will be placed:

• What type of soil do you have? Is the topsoil rich or do you have clay or a sandy soil bed?
• What are the sunlight conditions for the area? Will the sod be in the shade or receive direct sunlight?
• Will the sod be in a high-traffic area?
• Is your basic climate characterized as cool, warm or transitional?
• Do you have irrigation ready to water the new sod?

If you are unsure about the answers to these questions, you may find it helpful to discuss them with a turfgrass professional at Modern Turf who can easily determine the best sod type for your yard. Knowing this information is important in making the decision for the ideal sod types that will thrive in your yard’s environment.

For cool climates, you will find sod types that can withstand climate fluctuations, including some drought conditions. Grasses such as perennial ryegrass, fescues and Kentucky bluegrass are resilient and are also able to push out weeds.

For warmer climates, the primary growing season is summertime. There are far more options to suit a variety of needs when you consider the host of warm season grasses available today. In warmer climates, the grasses may go dormant in the winter, but in summer they will provide a beautiful yard. Bermuda, Zoysia, St. Autustine and Centipede are all warm season grasses.

Transition zones are the middle-ground between cooler and warmer climates. In these zones, a variety of sod types grow well. Choose between cool and warm season grasses, depending on where you are located and whether your climate leans toward cooler or warmer temperatures.

Choosing the best sod types for your home or business is the first step to achieving the lawn of your dreams. Some grasses grow more quickly than others, so if you are in a hurry to experience that velvety, green carpet, be sure to inquire about grass varieties that will take less time to establish.
As a professional sod farm, these experts know which type of turf is suitable for your climate and your usage needs. Palmetto St. Augustine sod grows well in a variety of climates and is more cold hardy than some other warm season grasses.

Palmetto St. Augustine sod grows best with sunshine, but as long as it receives at least four hours a day of direct sunlight, it is a shade tolerant grass which produces a beautiful emerald green blade. Palmetto St. Augustine maintains its green color longer and better than any other variety of St. Augustine grass, making it a preferred variety for many homeowners. It provides excellent coverage for your residential and commercial needs. Palmetto St. Augustine sod can even be laid during winter months, as long as you water it weekly. This versatility makes St. Augustine sod an excellent choice year round.

Palmetto St. Augustine is a drought hardy turf grass as well. Like all grasses, this variety will wilt without water, but it is surprisingly drought tolerant and will recover quickly when watered. In test fields, this St. Augustine sod variety has endured droughts as long as two months long. St. Augustine sod has a massive root system, giving it superior drought tolerance once it is established.

Modern Turf recommends Palmetto St. Augustine sod to discriminating home and business owners who are looking for a richly colored, shade tolerant, cold hardy grass for their property in the southern US. These sod experts recommend maintaining Palmetto St. Augustine sod at a height of 2 -2 3½ inches for best performance. Mowning height fluctuations are a direct reflection of available sunlight. The shadier the environment, the higher any grass should be maintained. Palmetto should be mowed every 7 to 10 days.

Sodding is like painting; the hard part is in the prep and the finished product is only as good as the preparation. By taking the time to make sure your soil is properly tilled, fertilized and prepared, you are creating a firm foundation for a lawn that will last a lifetime. You’ll have a lawn that is dense and full, recovers quickly from wear, uses less water and fertilizer and needs less maintenance. When you add up the time and money you save in the long run, proper soil preparation is well worth the time and effort before you lay your new sod.

Professional sod farms follow this adage: The beauty is in the blades, but the action is in the roots. Soil preparation lets the roots grow deep and even so the sod can accept nutrients and moisture properly for excellent growth and beauty.

Step one is soil preparation is clearing the soil properly. Get rid of all debris, rocks, building materials – anything greater than 2-3 inches in diameter. Once the soil is clear, rough grade everything to make sure you don’t have any drainage problems in the future. Make sure your soil slopes away from the foundation of any buildings, but keep the slopes mild. All low-lying areas should be properly filled. If you uncover more debris during the rough grade, be sure to remove it, rather than burying it.

Next, spray the area with a non-selective herbicide, such as Round-Up. Then wait a few days and till the area to a depth of at least two inches to control most annual weeds and loosen the subsoil. After this initial tilling, fertilize and water the soil to encourage any new weed growth – then spray again with the herbicide after 10 -14 days. This way you will prevent the new weed growth that can come with the addition of the new sod.

Now that you’ve done the initial tilling, it’s time to add topsoil (if needed) until you have a total topsoil depth of 4-6 inches after firming up the soil. The type of topsoil you use will depend on the area in which you live. Check with the sod professionals at Modern Turf for the best combination of loam, sand and clay for your area. Unless there are drainage issues, incorporate generous amounts of humus into the topsoil for the healthiest soil possible.

You need to test the pH of your topsoil with a soil chemical test to determine if you need to adjust the pH levels. If your soil is acidic (a pH level of 6 or lower) lime will reduce the acid levels. Alkaline soils (pH of 7.5 or higher) need sulfur or gypsum. Check with a professional for the appropriate amount of material to add to your soil to attain the appropriate pH levels. Most county extensions offer soil testing and will provide a report telling you what fertilizers to add to make yours a successful planting.

Next, you need to apply a “starter fertilizer” to the soil. The phosphate level of the fertilizer needs to be high – according to the recommended rate of the product. The starter fertilizer should be worked into the top 3-4 inches of the soil. This will prevent any root injury to the new sod. Once the starter fertilizer is worked into the topsoil, finish grade the entire area, taking care to maintain the sloping away from the foundation of the buildings.

Finally, roll the entire area with a lawn roller to firm the surface of the soil. The lawn roller should be about 1/3 filled with water. This process will also reveal any low areas in the soil that need to be filled before the sod is laid. Thoroughly water the area for the best possible settling of the soil before adding your sod.

Taking these soil preparation steps will be the best beginning to your new lawn. With proper soil preparation, your new lawn will establish healthy roots and provide beautiful, durable stand of grass for years to come.

Black Beauty tall fescue can eliminate this common problem forever, as it is a resilient grass that withstands harsh temperatures and even some drought conditions.

Known as a deeply rooted, cool season perennial grass, Black Beauty adapts well to a variety of soils, and even thrives on clay soils that are aerated annually. Black Beauty, like all tall fescue, sends a taproot about four feet into the ground, allowing it to access the moisture that other grasses cannot quite reach.

The difference in Black Beauty from other tall fescues is its unique leaf, which has a waxy coating that decreases moisture evaporation. This slowed evaporation process causes each leaf of the grass to become resistant to common diseases that can damage grasses.

Other characteristics of the Black Beauty tall fescue grass include:
• A beautiful sheen due to each leaf’s waxy coating.
• A finer leaf that gives a soft, lush appearance.
• Uniform basal leaves.
• Deep, dark green color, even when other warm season grasses turn brown.
• Survives in low pH soils where other fescues would fail.

Black Beauty tall fescue is commonly sold as a seasonal product, November to April, for climates that excel at growing cooler season grasses. It produces a lovely bunch-type growth habit and spreads by tillering.
Because the climate can be so unpredictable, it is a good idea to go with a hearty, tolerant grass like Black Beauty. When it comes to achieving the most beautiful yard possible, it pays to go with a resilient grass that can look great even when weather conditions are not ideal.

Forget following the crowd—your yard can stand out in the neighborhood. As other neighbors’ yards turn brown and crusty, your Black Beauty grass will maintain its green hue and verdant appearance. You may find that neighbors flock to your yard to find out how you do it!

Even better, choosing Black Beauty tall fescue for your yard means that you don’t have to overspend on your water bill to keep the grass looking healthy. This smart grass knows how to dig deep to find the water it needs to grow, thrive, and keep your yard looking its best.
If your golf course, school sports team, municipal stadium or pro field needs top quality sports turf with the ability to withstand wear and tear, Modern Turf guarantees every single piece of sod will perform.

Sports turf is different from even the highest traffic grasses. It needs to withstand incredible heat; wear and tear beyond the norm and it needs to have the resilience to bounce back almost immediately after use. It also needs to be free from pests, particularly nematodes, or weeds. Sports turf can be ruined from insects or weeds and because of the large area of sod needed, it can be particularly expensive to replace. Because of this potential cost, high-quality sports turf that protects against these issues can be difficult to find, and critical to budgets. Modern Turf is a sod farm in Rembert, SC and has a staff with several former golf superintendents whose experience gives them in-depth knowledge of sports turf.

Hank Kerfoot founded Modern Turf, Inc. in February of 2000. Modern Turf is a state-of-the-art turfgrass production company that grows and installs a complete variety of high quality turfgrass for the landscape and golf industries, as well as other sports turf.

With an original purchase of 410 acres, Modern Turf now encompasses 1200 acres and produces 10 varieties of turfgrass. A state-of-the-art turfgrass production facility, Modern Turf provides the highest quality grasses available on the market today.
