Frequenty Asked Questions

FAQs

  • What size sod pieces does Modern Turf offer?
  • Our sod harvesters have the ability to cut sod in mini-rolls, slabs and "big rolls", it all depends on what you want.
  • How far will Modern Turf deliver sod?
  • Depending on the size of the order we will deliver anywhere the client wants our products. Full tractor-trailer loads are easier and more economical to send further distances.
  • Can I see the sod before I buy it?
  • You Bet! Our operation is open to all potential and existing clients. Please call for an appointment and we will gladly show you our fields. We will even let you pick the plot you want and reserve it for you. We encourage anyone interested to come view our farm as this is one of the best ways to fully understand just how committed we are to growing the best grasses available.
  • How do I get prices for sod and/or installation service?
  • Just call our toll free telephone number (888-413-TURF) or email us.
  • Can Modern Turf help me grow my sod?
  • Absolutely. With four turfgrass specialists on staff we can offer suggestions on how to prepare your soil for sod, how to lay it, water it and care for it in terms of fertilizers, chemicals, mowing heights and frequency. We also have links on this web site to other avenues for you to learn about turfgrass care and problem solving.
  • What soil types are found at your farm?
  • Our farm varies in soil types from sandy loam to clay. Most of our grasses are grown on more than one soil type so we can match up as closely as possible to our client's needs.
  • Does Modern Turf sell any products other than sod?
  • We sell sod and sprigs. We plant sprigs and lay sod on large jobs such as golf courses and ball fields. Occasionally we sell fertilizers to aid in the establishment of sod.
  • Will St.Augustine grow in full sun?
  • St.Augustine like all grasses loves full sun. Just come look at our fields and you will see. St.Augustine needs a minimum of 4 hours of sunlight a day to survive. Remember that St.Augustine is “shade tolerant” not “shade loving”.
  • Does sod come with a guarantee?
  • We guarantee to deliver live plant material. We promise that you can lay every piece of sod we send you and it should be weed free. As far as a time frame to warrant the grass – none exists. If you think something is wrong it probably is so don’t wait to call for help. Often we are contacted after the sod is dead and do not have a chance to properly diagnose the ailment and implement a recovery plan for the grass.
  • What is the best grass for a home putting green?
  • Unless you are an avid gardener, and wish to spend time maintaining a real putting green every day, the best option is artificial turf. Artificial greens are a bit more expensive to build than real greens but you’ll get much more pleasure out of owning a green you can use whenever you wish. Remember many touring golf pros own artificial putting greens. These are people who could afford “live” greens if they wanted them. If you choose to have a real green don’t forget the following: reel type greens mower, special irrigation system with controller, verticutter, topdresser, aerator, blower, grooming brushes, sprayer - along with disease and insect and weed control. Most importantly be sure to have the proper time and training to use all these things.
