ALAN BLONDIN ON GRAND STRAND GOLF: Spruced Tidewater, Rivers Edge reopen today
Both Rivers Edge Golf Club and Tidewater Golf Club and Plantation are
reopening today following significant renovations, while improvements at
27-hole facilities Arrowhead Country Club and Sandpiper Bay Golf Club
are nearing completion.
Work done to Tidewater, which was recently rated 41st in Golf Digest's
ranking of America's greatest public courses, focused largely on tees
and included: enlarging, improving and sodding existing tee boxes,
controlling erosion on the par-4 10th hole and improving drainage on
some fairways and greens. On the scenic par-3 12th hole over marsh, a
tee box was extended, a tree to the left of the green was removed and a
bunker on the left side of the green was expanded.
Rivers Edge, which has struggled with green conditions practically since
opening in 1999 because of poor water quality from the marsh that abuts
the layout, now features the same salt-tolerant SeaDwarf Paspalum grass
on its greens that is wall-to-wall at Pine Lakes Country Club.
Greens on the Arnold Palmer design were changed from L93 bentgrass
through a no-till process that entails planting new grass without
tearing out the existing surface, though it is fumigated and aerated.
"I'm really pleased with how it went," said Rivers Edge superintendent
John Shaver. "The Paspalum turned out real well. We've got it groomed
out pretty good. It will take maybe two more weeks to really get it
there. We have it rolling maybe around 8 on the Stimpmeter."
A bunker was reconstructed behind the green of the par-3 fifth hole. It
was in the original design but it was filled in because the sand
constantly blew onto the green. Shaver's staff built a mound atop the
front face to keep sand from washing onto the green and put bales of
pine straw behind the bunker to deter erosion. Shaver plans to add
purple love and pink ruby grass on mounding around the hole.
Rivers Edge was closed for about eight weeks and Shaver completed
fertilizing Wednesday. "Overall we're in real good shape," he said. "We
got rid of some of the weeds in the rough and fairways. Now we're hoping
to see some business."
Both Sandpiper Bay and Arrowhead have kept 18 holes open throughout the
summer as workers change greens over to Mini-Verde Ultradwarf
Bermudagrass.
Sandpiper Bay is renovating its Piper nine and plans to reopen it Aug.
17. Arrowhead has been replacing greens through sodding nine holes at a
time, and is on its final nine known as the Lakes. The Waterway nine was
done early this summer and the Cypress nine reopened Monday.
"Everything has turned out great," Arrowhead head pro Eddie Dennis said.
"The grass is beautiful. It's looking good and this last week when it
started to get real hot, we were playing on the Lakes course, which
still had the [A1/Crenshaw] bentgrass, and it was showing some signs of
weakening. It's a relief to have that grass here in August when it gets
smoking hot. There's no stress, no excessive watering. It just handles
the heat.
"... Barring anything unforeseen, we should have everything fully
operational and all 27 back open by the first week of September."
Representatives of Mini-Verde developers Modern Turn inspected the new
greens at Sandpiper Bay's Piper nine Wednesday and gave a positive
report. The holes have been closed since May 23.
"We are on schedule and things are going well," said club head pro and
assistant general manager Richard Kascsak. "They require a little bit
more [time]. If push came to shove and we needed to play on them today,
we could. But there's no need to rush them."
The course is also replacing boards on bridges on the Piper nine, the
tee box on the third hole was leveled, and the practice putting green
has been redone with Mini-Verde. Kascsak hopes to reopen the practice
green before the Piper nine.
Greens on the Sand nine were redone last year and the Bay nine's will change next summer.

PHIL MICKELSON: Well, I've really come to love and appreciate the challenge that this golf course provides, and a few years ago when the course was changed to Mini Verde on the greens, it made a big difference. Two Myrtle Beach Golf Courses Install New Greens

Panther's Run, one of two Myrtle Beach golf courses getting a summer facelift, waters its new greens two months before the course reopens.
Millions of people make a summer pilgrimage to Myrtle Beach, most of
them to enjoy sun, sand and a taste of life on the coast. While area
beaches are teeming with people, Myrtle Beach golf courses often use the
“down time” for improvement projects, and this summer is no different.
A pair of North Strand Courses – Panther’s Run at Ocean Ridge Plantation
and the Bay Course at Sandpiper Bay Golf & Country Club, home of
three nine hole layouts – are closed for the installation of new
MiniVerde ultradwarf Bermuda greens and general course refurbishments.
That both courses are installing MiniVerde greens is no surprise.
MiniVerde has emerged as the green of choice for many courses throughout
the South with a putting surface that is nearly the equal of bentgrass
and it’s very heat tolerant.
The installation of the MiniVerde on the Bay Course will complete a
three-year overhaul of the Sandpiper’s greens. In 2008 the Sand Course
had MiniVerde installed and in 2009, the Piper Course followed suit. The
Bay Course, which was sprigged on June 8, is scheduled to reopen on
August 23.
The greens on the Bay nine are approximately a week ahead of schedule,
but the course’s reopening won’t be moved, according to Sandpiper’s head
pro and assistant general manager Richard Kascsak.
Sandpiper knew it had made the right call in installing MiniVerde greens
immediately after the Sand Course reopened to the public in 2008.
“The general public loves the greens,” Kascsak said of the reception to
the MiniVerde. “They are in fabulous condition and our superintendent
has done a superior job on the grow-in. We have had nothing but positive
remarks.”
Sandpiper is also using the time to repair the drainage on all of the
Bay’s bunkers, in addition to removing trees and enhancing the fairways.
When the Bay Course reopens, the Piper Course will close for 10 days to
take down trees and repair the cart paths, ensuring the course will be
in prime shape for the fall golf season.
In addition to the installation of new grass at Panther’s Run, the
greens are being restored to their original size, trees and some
railroad ties around tee boxes are being removed, and the cart paths are
being repaired.
Panther’s Run will reopen on September 1.

When you water your lawn is at least as important as how often you water
it. The advice to water early in the day is not just a practical joke

that long shoots (leaf blades) = long roots. While in the midst of a
drought, resist mowing at all or at least reduce your frequency and
raise the height for a healthier and better looking stand of grass.

Your lawn will thrive on the nitrogen it can draw from grass clippings.
While every lawn needs to be fed, that doesn’t always mean you need to
feed it commercial fertilizer. By leaving your mulched clippings on the
ground, you can cut your fertilizer use by about a third. Decomposing
clippings left by a mulching mower can help save and retain some
moisture as well. Use common sense if the lawn is extra long it is not
advisable to leave clumps of clippings. You should never fertilize your
yard during a drought, anyway. It’ll only stimulate growth that can’t be
sustained because of the drought.

Proper soil preparation is the single most important step in making sure your new sod
takes root and produces beautiful grass. Sodding is like painting; the
hard part is in the prep and the finished product is only as good as the
preparation. By taking the time to make sure your soil is properly
tilled, fertilized and prepared, you are creating a firm foundation for a
lawn that will last a lifetime. You’ll have a lawn that is dense and
full, recovers quickly from wear, uses less water and fertilizer and
needs less maintenance. When you add up the time and money you save in
the long run, proper soil preparation is well worth the time and effort
before you lay your new sod.
Professional sod farms follow this adage: The beauty is in the
blades, but the action is in the roots. Soil preparation lets the roots
grow deep and even so the sod can accept nutrients and moisture properly
for excellent growth and beauty.
Step one is soil preparation is clearing the soil properly. Get
rid of all debris, rocks, building materials – anything greater than
2-3 inches in diameter. Once the soil is clear, rough grade everything
to make sure you don’t have any drainage problems in the future. Make
sure your soil slopes away from the foundation of any buildings, but
keep the slopes mild. All low-lying areas should be properly filled. If
you uncover more debris during the rough grade, be sure to remove it,
rather than burying it.
Next, spray the area with a non-selective herbicide, such as
Round-Up. Then wait a few days and till the area to a depth of at least
two inches to control most annual weeds and loosen the subsoil. After
this initial tilling, fertilize and water the soil to encourage any new
weed growth – then spray again with the herbicide after 10 -14 days.
This way you will prevent the new weed growth that can come with the
addition of the new sod.
Now that you’ve done the initial tilling, it’s time to add
topsoil (if needed) until you have a total topsoil depth of 4-6 inches
after firming up the soil. The type of topsoil you use will depend on
the area in which you live. Check with the sod professionals at Modern
Turf for the best combination of loam, sand and clay for your area.
Unless there are drainage issues, incorporate generous amounts of humus
into the topsoil for the healthiest soil possible.
You need to test the pH of your topsoil with a soil chemical
test to determine if you need to adjust the pH levels. If your soil is
acidic (a pH level of 6 or lower) lime will reduce the acid levels.
Alkaline soils (pH of 7.5 or higher) need sulfur or gypsum. Check with a
professional for the appropriate amount of material to add to your soil
to attain the appropriate pH levels. Most county extensions offer soil
testing and will provide a report telling you what fertilizers to add
to make yours a successful planting.
Next, you need to apply a “starter fertilizer” to the soil.
The phosphate level of the fertilizer needs to be high – according to
the recommended rate of the product. The starter fertilizer should be
worked into the top 3-4 inches of the soil. This will prevent any root
injury to the new sod. Once the starter fertilizer is worked into the
topsoil, finish grade the entire area, taking care to maintain the
sloping away from the foundation of the buildings.
Finally, roll the entire area with a lawn roller to
firm the surface of the soil. The lawn roller should be about 1/3 filled
with water. This process will also reveal any low areas in the soil
that need to be filled before the sod is laid. Thoroughly water the area
for the best possible settling of the soil before adding your sod.
Taking these soil preparation steps will be the best beginning
to your new lawn. With proper soil preparation, your new lawn will
establish healthy roots and provide beautiful, durable stand of grass
for years to come.
