Lawn fertilizer: with spring around the corner you need to fertilize now to get the best results

Modern TurfWith spring just a few weeks away, now is the time to get your lawn and garden fertilized. Your grass needs to be fed in order for it to maintain that healthy, lush appearance you desire and right before spring is the perfect time to begin fertilizing and applying pre-emergent herbicide. These products prevent weeds from taking hold in your lawn later in the summer. In addition to feeding your lawn, proper fertilization helps reduce disease, weeds and bugs that can damage your lawn.

Here are 3 tips to consider:
  • 1) Don’t over-fertilize: It is possible to harm your lawn by over fertilizing. You should follow the manufacturer’s directions as far as the frequency of fertilizing. It is usually done every two months.

  • 2) Keep the lawn watered: Once the lawn is fertilized make sure you keep your lawn properly watered. Your lawn needs water to stay healthy and be careful not to over-water. Deep and infrequent is the best way to irrigate.

  • 3) Use a spreader to apply: It is very important to use a rotary spreader when applying lawn fertilizer. This method will evenly spread the fertilizer throughout the entire area. This will help prevent over-fertilizing one area over the rest and ensures that all areas will receive the appropriate amount. Drop spreaders should never be used to spread fertilizer.
