Your lawn maintenance questions answered.

How often should I fertilize my lawn? It really depends on the variety of grass in your lawn. Some only need fertilization two to three times a year. Some grass varieties should never be fertilized in the fall. It’s best to check with a lawn maintenance expert before you fertilize, so you’ll know what’s going to work for your particular lawn.

When is the best time to water my lawn? Best watering time for lawns is early morning before the sun rises. This allows the water to absorb into the ground before the sun begins evaporating it. Also winds are calmest early in the morning so overspray will be reduced. It’s not recommended to water at night.

Is lawn fertilization safe? If done properly, lawn fertilization is safe. Make sure you consult a professional before choosing products, and then follow the manufacturer’s directions exactly.

How can I improve grass growth under my trees? Grass requires an adequate amount of sunlight and water to grow. Trees use significantly more water than grass does. Consider pruning the trees to allow for more sunlight to shine through, but don’t forget to also make sure you water grass under the tree adequately.

How much should I water my lawn? Opt for a long, infrequent soaking rather than watering frequently for short periods of time. You should water at least 1 inch of water per week.
