How to fix winter turf grass problems.

Caring for your turf in the winter months is just as important as caring for it during the spring, summer, and fall. Of course, taking a proactive approach to caring for your turf will help eliminate problems during the winter.

During the winter months, your turf grass can be damaged by the harsh elements of winter weather. Here are two common issues your turf may have during the winter months.

• Dead patches: It’s common to develop areas of dead patches in your turf grass. Damage can be done by harsh weather, disease, pets or other critters. To repair dead patches, you can replace damaged sod in the winter as long as the soil hasn’t frozen.

• Ice damage: Ice can cause a great problem for lawns. The amount of damage depends on the grass species, and the length of time the grass is covered with ice. If your turf has damage caused by ice, you will most likely need to replace the turf. Before replacing the turf, inspect the roots to see if they are succulent. Proper drainage is an important part in preventing ice damage, so make sure your turf has proper drainage to remove excess water.
