The no-till process is a cost effective way to convert greens from bentgrass or old bermudagrass to the newer MiniVerde ultradwarf with minimal disruption to the surface. Building a new USGA green can be costly and time consuming and a lot of times unnecessary. The rich, organic profile that bentgrass tends to suffer in is in most cases, conducive to growing good MiniVerde.
The process is simply killing the existing turf (bent and bermudagrass contamination) and planting a new grass into the greens without removing significant portions of existing putting surfaces. Greens are prepared by eradicating, scalping, verticutting and aerifying the existing surface to remove any excess thatch, then applying a ¼” sand base for the sprigs to “nestle” themselves into. All equipment needed to prepare the greens surface is most times readily available at the golf course itself. A second application of sand is made on top of the sprigs to effectively prevent them from moving and drying out. After weeks of fertilizing, watering, mowing, topdressing, spiking, rolling, etc…new greens will be ready to putt on in as little as six weeks.
Is your course a no-till candidate? Most likely but a Modern Turf representative will conduct a free site analysis to determine if your greens are agronomically suitable for this type of conversion. We particularly look at how well the greens surface drain, are there any shade issues, and is there any significant layering in the profile. Based on that information we advise the golf course on what would be the most economic and effective way for a successful conversion.
Total reconstruction can take several weeks in preparation alone and typically results in a slower grow-in because of the lack of a rich, organic based growing medium. With the no-till process, preparation can be done in days and the grow-in is fast resulting in less down time for the golfers while minimizing lost revenue to the club. On average, a no-till conversion from close to open will take 8 weeks compared to the 4 – 5 months being closed for a full blown reconstruction.
Modern Turf estimates that over 75% of the new greens we have planted in the last 5 years have been done through the no-till process. Courses such as Pinehurst #1 in NC, Legends @ Vanderbilt in TN, and World Tour Golf Links in SC have all successfully changed to MiniVerde by way of no-till conversion. Contact a Modern Turf representative and set up you free site analysis to determine if you’re a candidate for MiniVerde no-till conversion.
